What Is Honesty?
We often think of honesty as simply telling the truth.
But is that where honesty begins?
Before words are ever spoken, there is observation.
We see something.
We interpret it.
We feel something about it.
Then we form a conclusion.
But are those things always the same?
What happened may be one thing.
What we believe happened may be another.
What we felt about what happened may be something else entirely.
And what we eventually tell ourselves about it may be shaped by our expectations, previous experiences, assumptions, fears, or desires.
So perhaps honesty begins before we ever speak to another person.
Perhaps it begins with the willingness to look within ourselves and ask:
Did I see this clearly?
Did I add something that was never actually there?
Did I leave something out because it was uncomfortable to acknowledge?
Am I describing what happened—or am I describing what I concluded about what happened?
A person can speak sincerely and still be mistaken.
A person can remain silent and still be honest.
Privacy is not necessarily dishonesty.
Boundaries are not necessarily dishonesty.
But intentionally creating a false understanding in another person is something different.
Honesty may therefore be more than telling the truth.
It may be the willingness to remain as close as we can to what is actually there—without reshaping it simply because another version is easier to accept.
And perhaps this is why honesty with others begins with honesty within ourselves.
Because if we cannot clearly distinguish between what we observed, what we felt, and what we concluded, how can we expect another person to understand what actually occurred?
Each of us sees life from a particular position.
One perspective does not necessarily contain the whole.
Perhaps another person can reveal something we could not see from where we were standing.
So the question may not simply be:
“Am I telling the truth?”
Perhaps the deeper question is:
“Have I been willing to see it clearly first?”
